"Haydn, his mistress, their son, and his successor"Kwartet Andre Kwartet André's recent CD release entitled 'Haydn, his Mistress, their Son and his Successor' is a perfect example of the way in which the ensemble presents repertoire by famous composers as well as introducing works by those lesser known to create unified programmes. It consists of two clarinet quartets by Joseph Haydn and Johann Nepomuk Hummel along with the world premiere recording of the Trio Concertante for clarinet, viola and violoncello by Alois Anton Polzelli. In July 1999, Kwartet André was awarded a prestigious prize in the Concours Musica Antiqua at the Festival van Vlaanderen in Brugge, Belgium. More recently the ensemble has performed three concerts at the Barcelona Early Music Festival and later this year, Kwartet André will perform five concerts for the Dutch Early Music Network Concert Series. Probably the most progressive and challenging area of the music world, currently, is that of early music or authentic performance. Scholars and performers in this field are dedicated to rendering the music of the past in accordance with the musical styles and tastes of its own time rather than with those of more recent eras. This involves not only performing on original instruments but reproducing, as far as possible, the performance tradition with its accepted conventions of musical expression and technique. The members of Kwartet André strive to perform music from the classical period with a beauty of expression and interpretation in keeping with the wishes of the composer. The ensemble has researched extensively into the genre of clarinet quartet repertoire from the late 18th century and their musical ideas rely upon this knowledge along with their own personal feelings and interpretations. Kwartet André takes its name from the famous Offenbach music publisher, Johann Anton André. In 1799, Andrés publishing company purchased the Nachlass (remaining unpublished works) from Mozarts widow, Constanze Nissen. Shortly after, they published a set of three arrangements for clarinet quartet. André himself was well known for his editorial work on the Nachlass and it is most probable that he was responsible for the arrangements of Mozarts two violin sonatas and keyboard sonata for this instrumentation.
